Platelet-Rich Plasma:

What is it?: Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP), is blood plasma that had been enriched with platelets, which as a result releases several different growth factors that stimulate healing of bone and soft tissue.

What is the Process?: Blood is drawn from your pet, which is then centrifuged several times.   A reagent is added to activate the PRP, which can then be administered to the patient.  It can be applied topically to wounds or incisions, or injected intravenously or into joints. To process takes 2-3 hours.

More information: Next to Stem Cell Therapy, PRP is the second best choice.  The effects of PRP do not last as long (6 weeks) as Stem Cell Therapy would.  This is much less expensive than stem cell therapy, but can be used as a precursor to stem cell therapy to see if stem cell is likely to be a benefit.  It make also be used in an elderly animal with a limited lifespan that we are trying to just keep comfortable. This can also be used with NSAIDS.
